Aether Fuels has announced successful construction, commissioning and operation of a fully integrated demonstration line producing synthetic aviation fuel that meets ASTM D7566, the international standard for synthetic jet fuel. The demonstration used Aether's 2.5 barrel-per-day Aurora Tri-Converter and Aurora Upgrader units, integrated with an existing Fischer-Tropsch reactor at RTI, converting mass-balanced renewable natural gas from landfill gas in Kentucky and industrial CO2 into fully upgraded synthetic jet fuel. Aether states it believes this makes it the first company in North America to produce ASTM-specification synthetic aviation fuel from mass-balanced RNG and captured industrial CO2 at this scale.
What Independent Testing Actually Confirmed
Third-party testing by AmSpec confirmed the fuel samples met the applicable ASTM specification for Fischer-Tropsch Synthesized Paraffinic Kerosene (FT-SPK), the specific annex within ASTM D7566 covering this fuel type. Because the FT-SPK pathway is already an ASTM-approved route, fuel meeting this specification can be blended with conventional kerosene up to 50% without requiring modifications to existing aircraft tanks, pipelines, or airport fuelling systems, and without needing separate new ASTM certification for Aether's specific process.
Why an Integrated Demonstration Is a Different Milestone From Individual Component Tests
This demonstration follows Aether's earlier, separate validation of its Tri-Converter unit as a stand-alone component, conducted with GTI Energy. Chief Technology Officer Dhaval Shah's own framing distinguishes the two: this newer test proves the company's ability to take a feedstock through the complete end-to-end process using the integrated Aurora platform, rather than validating individual pieces of equipment in isolation. Aether's own account of its scale-up path describes systematically demonstrating each part of the Aurora platform at pilot scale, then scaling the technology more than 50-fold in standalone demonstration units, before this integrated line brought those separately validated units together for the first time.
What This Specifically De-Risks
Shah stated the data from this demonstration directly informs and de-risks the design of Aether's planned 50 barrel-per-day Project Beacon facility in Singapore, a 2,000 metric tonne annual capacity commercial project. Aether frames this integrated demonstration explicitly as a step reducing technical risk for that specific upcoming commercial-scale project, rather than as a standalone research achievement disconnected from a defined next commercial step.
The Broader Pipeline This Sits Within
Aether states it holds a pipeline of larger commercial projects planned to follow Project Beacon, intended to produce ASTM D7566-compliant SAF with lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions reductions of more than 70% compared with conventional fossil jet fuel. CEO Conor Madigan's own statement frames this demonstration as putting the company "on the right track" to build and operate Project Beacon and the commercial projects that follow it, rather than describing either as fully secured or under construction yet.
